Getting outside this winter doesn’t mean you have to be willing to climb Katahdin, or even drive more than half an hour from home. Whether it be an afternoon stroll, a spin on the new cross-country skis, or just an afternoon sledding with the kids, you’ll feel refreshed and exhilarated. Here are some resources to help find trails in your area.
Healthy Maine Walks: A comprehensive recreation directory! Allows you to search for trails by location and provides a detailed description of each, as well as allowed trail uses (biking, walking, skiing, etc.).
Portland Trails: Features an interactive map to find trails in the area from South Portland north to Falmouth and inland as far as Westbrook.
Ski Maine Association: A great comprehensive listing of ski centers in Maine, both downhill and cross-country/nordic, with links to each and current snow conditions. Also includes a schedule of events.
Trails.com: Sort by activity (cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, etc.) and see an overview and description of each trail.
Maine Tourism Association: A summary of activities by season and links to resources for each, including upcoming events, vacation suggestions, a fall foliage report, how to find a professional outdoor guide, ski and snowshoe centers, and trail systems information.
