Level 1, 2, and 3 Charging

The level of charge refers to the voltage provided by the charging station, and in turn affects the amount of time it takes to charge the battery.

EV-ChargingStation_photo_1_WEBA level 1 charge uses a standard domestic power source of 110-120 voltz. With a level 1 source, a full charge can take 8-16 hours or more. However, since most charges will only require a partial charge, 5-10 hours is a more common estimate, perfect for overnight charges.

A level 2 charge uses 220-240 voltz and a full charge can take 4-6 hours. A general “top off” using a level 2 charge would likely take 1-2 hours. A level 3 charge uses 440 voltz and is capable of a full charge in 30 minutes.

I have a Leaf. I’ll be driving with friends next week to Bailey Island ME from our home in Amesbury, MA. Your list very useful! My husband has a family home in Hancock ME and wants to bring my Leaf there – so we are always looking to find charging stations on the way.
I had to talk him into this car, our other is a VW van. Now he is totally hooked, as am I.
Thanks very much for your information.

We are looking to install a charging station at our business here in Rangeley, how does the business collect the $1 per hour to charge?
      Honor system?
Any info would be greatly appreciated,
Also, what kind of charging staion do you have, suggestions on where to purchase one?
Our Electrician has some info, we’re trying to gather more.
      Thank you

Thanks for this. I use Plug Share and Next Charge both useful apps to locate stations. I’m a new Leaf owner in Hancock County. I wish (almost can’t believe there isn’t) a charging station in Ellsworth or Belfast.

Let us know if one gets put up.

We’re looking to install a car charging station at our restaurant,
Any suggestions on which is best, how can you charge people for this service, and or what do other places do? Free charging if you eat / stay? just curious.

    • Amanda Crutcher June 23, 2017 at 8:45 am #

Free charging if you eat or stay will be a win win! Great idea.

    • Genie July 10, 2017 at 1:42 pm #

Monika – Contact ReVision Energy. They have several offices in Maine, NH and MA. Great folks to work with and they can advise you.

  9. Ryan June 12, 2017 at 11:43 pm #

    Hi Monika

As ev charging is prettt inexpensibe and new to maine i would suggest installing a levington 40a charger from Amazon. These cost around $400 and can be installed for $150. An hour of charging would cost around 90 cents to a dollar for an hour of use. You would benefit from people stopping and eatting. A system that takes credit cards start at 2500 plus require monthly fees…its just not cost effective.
